The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is the principal association for geotechnical engineers in the UK.
Past event: Please note this event information is displayed for informational purposes only.
Hosted by The University of Southampton and the Southern Geotechnical Group.
The evening will feature presentations by the three competition finalists:
• Letisha Rorke: The effects of suction and principal stress rotation on the stiffness of a railway formation
• William Beuckelaers: Fatigue life calculation of monopiles for offshore wind turbines using a kinematic hardening soil model
• Georgios Katsigiannis: HYD Verifications Using Numerical Methods
Whilst the judges are deliberating, our guest speaker Ziggy Lubkowski (Arup Seismic Specialist) will be giving a presentation on “Communicating Earthquake Risk”. He questions whether we do enough to reduce risk to communities and the environment and, by way of examples taken from recent research and the aftermath of damaging earthquakes, he will put forward some suggestions on a way forward.
The event will be at the University’s new Boldrewood Campus. Parking will be available in the University car park at Boldrewood, which is on the North side of Building 177, and is well sign posted. There are no parking restrictions after 17:00. Instructions to reach the site are available online
Young Geotechnical Engineers are invited to submit papers by 16th January 2015. Papers are to be of less than 2000 words. Entrants should be under 30 years of age on 31st December 2015. Following selection, the finalists will present their papers to a panel of three judges who will select the winner. Prizes include a cheque for £200, BGA sponsorship to the European Young Geotechnical Engineers’ Conference (Durham, 2015), publication of the winning paper, a cut glass decanter and much more. The evening’s proceedings will commence at 6.00pm and will include a guest lecture together with presentations from the finalists.
