Early Career Group Event - Around the World in 80 Minutes

Date: 2nd October 2018 at 6.30pm
Venue: Godfrey Mitchell Theatre, ICE, One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA
Presented by: Rob Talby (Mott MacDonald), Javier Olazabal (TYPSA) & Greg McKenna (Byrne Looby)

Do you wonder what working abroad as an engineer would be like? Have you ever considered living on the other side of the world? If the answer is yes, then this talk is for you! Please join us to hear about the fantastic experiences of three individuals (Rob Talby, Javier Olazabal and Greg McKenna) who between themselves have worked in the USA, Canada, Spain and Australia. There will be networking drinks in the ICE bar following the talk.

Rob Talby: Geotechnical director at Mott MacDonald with more than 20 years’ experience in project management and geotechnical engineering on building and infrastructure projects in the UK, North America, Europe, Middle East and the Far East. Worked in North America for Arup for 7 years; 4 years in New York and 3 years in Toronto. His talk will describe his motivations to live and work in North America, the projects he worked on, compare approaches to codes and standards, challenges faced, participation in local geotechnical societies, obtaining new licences, and the benefits of this fantastic experience.

Javier Olazabal: Civil engineer at TYPSA with experience in railway and maritime projects both in Europe and further afield. Joined TYPSA in 2008 as a structural engineer focussing on the conception and design of complex structural systems including underground structures. Design manager for various rail and maritime projects. His talk will touch on three projects which include ground improvement for a bridge in Peru, the assessment of geotechnical hazards and risk for the Gipuzcoan Highways Network and harbour ground work, both in Spain.

Greg McKenna: Works for Byrne Looby in Guildford. Worked for 8 years as an engineering geologist in Australia for Coffey Geotechnics. Predominately worked on highways projects focussing on ground models, earthworks, slope stability and landslide risk assessment. His talk will touch on some of the projects he was involved in and the differences between working in Australia and the UK. He will also talk about the lifestyle and the opportunities that living in Queensland can offer.

This event is sponsored by Mott MacDonald. A flyer for the event can be found here.

The event is free to attend, however advanced booking is required via the link below.
