Synopsis

Foundations for offshore wind turbines of the future face many challenges. Due to the growing demand for renewable energy, future projects will be built further offshore in deeper water and wind turbine generators will become larger leading to increased foundation loads. Furthermore, in some regions, foundations must be installed without exceeding strict regulatory requirements on underwater noise. Whilst monopiles still reign supreme as the most common foundation concept for offshore wind turbines, the traditional foundation solutions are being pushed to their limits and there is a need for innovative foundation concepts. The suction bucket jacket (SBJ) is one such foundation concept which addresses these future challenges. As last year (2018) saw a record number of suction bucket jackets for offshore wind turbines installed, this presentation will describe some geotechnical aspects of suction bucket foundations for offshore wind turbines using real measurements from suction buckets installed in the North Sea.

Speaker biography

Avi Shonberg is a Lead Geotechnical Engineer at Ørsted in London. Avi has a background in foundation design for both onshore and offshore projects. Since joining Ørsted 5 years ago, Avi has been involved in many aspects of foundation design for offshore windfarm developments around the world, including projects in the UK, Germany, the USA and Taiwan. A key focus has been the detailed geotechnical design of jacket foundations, with a particular focus on the design and installation of suction buckets as a foundation solution to support offshore wind turbines.
