Preparing for ICE Professional Review - Avoiding 'geotechnical failures' 2020

Tuesday 18th February 2020 at 18:00

Godfrey Mitchell Lecture Theatre, Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA

Delivered by Yvonne Ainsworth from Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions and Anurag Kushwaha from Atkins

The BGA Early Career Group are pleased to invite you to February’s event. The talk will provide practical guidance for geotechnical engineers on how to approach the Professional Review and interpret the ICE guidelines into the geotechnical field. If you are considering sitting your Professional Review in the near future, this event will be a unique opportunity to get insight from two very experienced and well-accomplished geotechnical engineers, who are currently ICE Reviewers. Yvonne Ainsworth will talk about how to achieve different attributes and demonstrate competence at the Professional Review. Anurag Kushwaha will present some tips and advice on how to avoid potential pitfalls at the Professional Review.

The presentations will be followed by a short mock review including a presentation and an interview with a recent successful geotechnical engineer. This will be followed by a Q & A session with Yvonne, Anurag and a number of recent successful candidates.

Please join us for drinks after the event, kindly sponsored by Atkins.

This event is free to attend and registration is not required. This event will also be available to view online, please check the ICE website for further details.

Yvonne Ainsworth

Yvonne started her engineering life in 1995 in Aachen, Germany where she qualified as a civil and structural engineer specialising in Geotechnics. She started work in 2001 in the UK as a consultant with Atkins. She decided she belonged in the contractor’s world after her site placement with Cementation and remained working there as Design Team Leader. After a short career break travelling the world, she joined BAUER where she progressed to Construction and Technical Director. During this time she was involved in extremely challenging projects and took part in the Fleming Award 2011 with the construction of the D-shaped pile. In 2016, Yvonne set up her own business, ATD Engineering. Since then, she has worked on other interesting projects such as London City Airport, Thames Tideway and Gothenburg Central Station. Yvonne now works as a Director for Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions.

Anurag Kushwaha

Anurag has been with Atkins since 2006 and is a Chartered Civil engineer with over 22 years of experience. His experiences ranges from geotechnical investigation, analyses, and design to instrumentation & monitoring, and construction support. He has been involved with numerous mass transit projects located in India, Denmark, Middle East and the UK. He has also been instrumental in developing and growing the geotechnical and tunnelling team in Atkins’ Global Design Centre, India. Anurag has extensive experience in leading large design teams for major multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects such as Crossrail, London Gateway rail link, Olympic Park Infrastructure, Reading Viaduct, Farringdon Station Redevelopment and Acton Dive-under. More recently, Anurag has been leading the geotechnical team for the East West Rail Phase 2 project. He is currently an ICE reviewer and acting as SCE for many young graduates both in tunnelling and ground engineering practices within Atkins.
