The first ever European Earthworks Standard, BS EN 16907, were published at the end of 2018. This was the culmination of over ten years of detailed collaborative working by earthworks specialists from many European countries including the UK. The new standard treats earthworks design as a process, which will be illustrated in the lecture using topical project examples.
Earthworks are a feature of nearly every geotechnical project and so the subject of this meeting will be of interest and relevance to all geotechnical engineers. As well as introducing the main aspects of the new standard, the speakers will discuss how BS 6031, the BS Code of Practice for Earthworks, will be updated to align it with the new European standard. They will also introduce CEN Technical Specification for Continuous Compaction Control, also prepared by the CEN TC 396 working group, which has the potential to introduce innovations to the process and recording of compaction in the UK.
Peter Gilbert is the UK Head of Tunnelling and Ground Engineering at Jacobs and is one of the UK’s leading technical specialists on earthworks. He successfully led the UK experts on CEN TC 396 and in the UK Mirror Group for the preparation of EN 16907. He also previously led the BSI committee which updated BS 6031 in 2009. He is the co-author of the leading UK book on Earthworks and has also published other articles and papers on ground engineering topics.
Alan Phear is an Associate Director and Geotechnical Advisor with Arup. He is also a leading UK technical specialist on earthworks with long experience of the design and construction of roads, railways and airports in the UK and overseas. He led the preparation of EN 16907 Part 5 (Quality Control) and helped to write CEN/TS 17006:2016 on Continuous Compaction Control. He has authored or co-authored three books and many papers on ground engineering and other topics.
