Event Information

The Touring Lecture was established by the British Geotechnical Society (the predecessor to the BGA) in the 1980s to provide support to Regional Geotechnical Groups in the UK by bringing eminent geotechnical professionals from overseas to deliver a lecture on their particular expertise. The Lecture is biennial and is held at three venues around the country.

This event is hosted by the Scottish Ground Engineering Group of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

This event is free to attend.

Synopsis

The main objective of this event is to promotes use of shear wave velocity (Vs) measurements as a compliment to standard CPTU, SPT and other in situ test data. Recent developments techniques for measuring Vs, e.g. SCPTU and MASW are described. Correlations between Vs and CPTU data and also with a variety of soil properties can be very powerful. However these correlations should ideally be local and only applied to other soils and areas with great caution. An exception might be for correlation between Vs and preconsolidation stress pc'. Use of Vs data to help assess sample disturbance and for the prediction of settlement of footings is described. Some future outlooks including dealing with lateral variability and anisotropy are discussed.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Long is an Associate Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin. His particular areas of interest concern the engineering behaviour of natural soft soils and in particular peat and the construction of deep excavations in urban areas. He has published more than 90 journal papers on these topics. Before joining UCD, Dr. Long worked for consulting engineers, mostly Ove Arup & Partners, as a geotechnical engineer in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Singapore. He has particular experience in site investigation, foundation design, soft ground engineering and deep basement and embankment construction.
