2019 BGA Medal Winning Paper announced

The 2019 BGA Medal is awarded to the paper “Pore water pressure and total horizontal stress response to EPBM tunnelling in London Clay” by Michael Wan, Jamie Standing, David Potts and John Burland

The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is pleased to announce that the 2019 BGA Medal has been awarded to the paper “Pore water pressure and total horizontal stress response to EPBM tunnelling in London Clay” by Michael Wan, Jamie Standing, David Potts and John Burland of Imperial College and the Geotechnical Consulting Group.

The full reference for the paper is:

M.S.P.Wan, J.R.Standing, D.M.Potts and J.B.Burland (2019) “Pore water pressure and total horizontal stress response to EPBM tunnelling in London Clay”. Géotechnique 69, No. 5, 434–457 https://doi.org/10.1680/jgeot.17.P.309

The paper can be accessed via the ICE Virtual Library here.

The Judges selected this paper because of the high quality field measurements of changes in pore water pressure and total horizontal stress and for the insightful interpretation that will undoubtedly be of great interest to others particularly those validating numerical models.

The BGA Medal is awarded annually (each calendar year) by the BGA to a paper substantially authored by a BGA member or BGA members published in an international journal and from BGA, ISSMGE and ISRM conferences, and submitted for consideration of the award.
