2025 Fleming Award Winner Announced

The BGA is pleased to announce that the 2025 Fleming Award was won by United Utilities, Stantec, and Keller for their project presentation on The challenges of maintaining a Bateman Embankment Dam.

The event was held in front on a live audience at the ICE in London on 2 December 2025. The event was also webcast live.

The standard of entries was extremely high and led to a great evening showcasing geotechnical innovation and collaboration.

The Fleming Award was awarded to “The challenges of maintaining a Bateman Embankment Dam”.

The winning team, United Utilities, Stantec, and Keller, were recognised for their forensic engineering and exemplary collaboration in tackling complex dam maintenance. Judges praised their proactive approach and close engagement, commending the project for its effective teamwork and technical excellence.

During judging there was a short presentation by the Anthony Fisher of Cementation on ‘Proving and improving our foundations’.

The Fleming Award Competition is held annually to commemorate the life and work of Dr Ken Fleming and to recognise excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project. Entries are invited from teams which will typically include representatives from Clients, Main Contractors, Consulting Engineers, Specialist Contractors and so on. The award will be presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction. There will be an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project. Consideration will also be given to projects which are innovative.
