Eduardo Alonso to be 57th Rankine Lecture

Following the successful 56th Rankine Lecture, delivered last night by Prof Richard Jardine, the overseas lecturer for 2017 was announced. The 57th Rankine Lecture will be delivered by Prof Eduardo Alonso from UPC in Barcelona.

Following the successful 56th Rankine Lecture, delivered last night by Prof Richard Jardine, the overseas lecturer for 2017 was announced. The 57th Rankine Lecture will be delivered by Prof Eduardo Alonso from UPC in Barcelona.

Eduardo Alonso is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain. He received his Engineering degree from the Universidad de Madrid in 1969 and his PhD from Northwestern University in 1973. He is the current editor of Geotechnique. His main topics of interest are reliability and risk in geotechnical engineering, behaviour of partially saturated soils, expansive soils and rocks, numerical analysis of geotechnical problems, field measurements and geotechnical back analysis, slope stability. Previous awards include, amoung others, the Thomas Telford Medal (twice), Geotechnical Research Medal (also twice), the Crampton Prize & the 30th Rocha Lecture.
