Engineering in Chalk 2018 – First Announcement

The BGA and the Engineering Group of the Geological Society are pleased to announce that a major international conference on Engineering in Chalk will be held over 2 days in Spring/Summer 2018 in Central London.

The BGA and the Engineering Group of the Geological Society are pleased to announce that a major international conference on Engineering in Chalk will be held over 2 days in Spring/Summer 2018 in Central London.

The last major conference on Chalk was held almost 30 years ago in 1989 in Brighton. It is time to bring together the knowledge and experience gained in the last three decades, and the new conference presents a great opportunity to present research and case histories to provide a definite up to date perspective on engineering in Chalk.

In addition to conference papers (which will be published in formal proceedings), there will be a series of authoritative keynote lectures on important aspects of engineering in Chalk. There will also be a conference dinner or reception in the conference programme. Sponsorship opportunities will be available.

Further details will be provided on a conference website in autumn 2016. At that time a call will be made the submission of abstracts in the fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology, under the topics that may include

  • Case histories of construction and engineering
  • Earthworks in Chalk
  • Foundations and piling, pile design, installation
  • Future engineering issues in Chalk
  • Geological hazards in Chalk
  • Offshore engineering in Chalk
  • Site investigation/characterisation
  • Testing – in situ and laboratory
  • Tunnelling and shaft sinking in Chalk
  • Water and the environment.

If you wish to become involved in organising or supporting conference, please contact the Chairman of the Conference Committee, Dr Martin Preene: email mp@preene.com .
