Introduction
The BGA Annual Dinner is an important date in the BGA’s annual calendar of events. This prestigious occasion will bring together the geotechnical community for an evening of fine food, socializing and networking.
The 4th BGA Annual Dinner will include the BGA Invited Lecture by Professor Giulia Viggiani, titled “Two thousand years and twenty metres apart: tunnelling beneath the Cloaca Maxima in the historic centre of Rome”, offering a fascinating insight into the challenges of tunnelling beneath one of Rome’s most historic sites.
Urban underground infrastructure increasingly needs to coexist with the built and archaeological heritage of historic cities. This lecture explores the challenges encountered during the construction of Rome Metro Line C, where modern tunnels pass beneath ancient masonry and concrete structures.
Focusing on the Cloaca Maxima, the lecture will examine its measured response to TBM tunnelling, combining construction observations and field monitoring with physical and numerical modelling.
Recent centrifuge experiments and numerical analyses will provide further insight into the interaction between tunnelling, ground movements and ancient structures.
The Rome case study offers valuable lessons for urban geotechnical engineering and the challenge of developing new infrastructure while preserving structures that have survived for thousands of years.
The lecture will only be open to those attending the dinner.
Advance booking is required for the BGA Annual Dinner and Invited Lecture, which includes the presentation, a drinks reception, and a three-course dinner.
The Lecture and Dinner are open to BGA members and non-members alike.
