The BGA Annual Dinner and Invited Lecture includes a drinks reception, and a three-course dinner
From sandcastles built on the beach to dams constructed between boulders and on a temporary stream at home, Sarah Springman began her civil engineering early. Unsurprisingly, she found herself studying engineering sciences at Cambridge University, choosing to focus on soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Graduating in 1978, with a share of the Roscoe Prize, she travelled for 3 of the next 5 years, working on the Port Augusta power station (Australia) and the 85m high Monasavu Dam (Fiji). She returned to Cambridge for postgraduate degrees and a spell as University Lecturer before appointment as full Professor at ETH Zurich, where she spent 25 years, the last 7 as Rector. She retired to become Principal of St Hilda’s College, Oxford.
In parallel, she has enjoyed a career as an international athlete, winning multiple national titles in 5 sports in 4 different countries and some European titles too. Later, she served in sport administration, contributing to the growth of her main sport, triathlon, through inclusion in the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games and the initiation of Lottery Funding for performance sport in Great Britain.
