  As a Professor in Planetary and Engineering Geology, Richard is interested in most areas of geology, but principally his research has been on tectonic processes away from plate boundaries, on continental areas of Earth, particularly the London Basin, and on Venus, where the lack of erosion means that these processes are more clearly discernible. He has worked with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for more than 25 years and understands its strangeness as an imaging system, and the use of phase information for change detection. For the first time they now have a tool that can measure the mm/yr rate of horizontal and vertical movement characteristic of low seismicity continental interiors. He is applying these techniques to help predict ground engineering problems and groundwater flow, and is developing new tools using the full amplitude, phase and polarimetric components of SAR data.

  James is a Reader in Geological Engineering who specialises in upper Cretaceous carbonate geology (Chalk), rock engineering and remote sensing (InSAR). These research specialisms support civil infrastructure, the energy sector and climate change impact. James has had the opportunity to develop his academic and research skills through involvement with multiple major infrastructure projects including HS2, Thames Tideway, The Lower Thames Crossing, and involvement in the nuclear power lifecycle from construction to decommissioning, and eventual disposal of radioactive waste in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).
