Introduction

Early Career Group Event – Construction Disputes & “Adult Tantrums”

Date: 16th May 2018 at 6.30pm
Venue: Godfrey Mitchell Theatre, ICE, One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA
Presented by: Matina-Christina Sougle (Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Vattenfall) & David Coyne (Managing Consultant, Blackrock Expert Services)

Disputes are common in the construction industry, with each dispute being unique and usually entailing high financial risks. This talk will provide a practical explanation of what a construction dispute is, what can cause a project to go into dispute, the legal process, and the “science” behind its resolution.

This event will be an opportunity to extend one’s knowledge of standard forms of contract and how they approach adverse ground conditions. In terms of the science behind a dispute, the event will explain project delay analysis carried out by engineers, and its place in the dispute resolution spectrum. By the end, attendees will be able to further understand how to avoid disputes or their potential roles in dispute resolution.

The talk will also provide an insight into how two young design geotechnical engineers gained experience in expert witness work and dispute resolution consultancy work.
