Fleming Award 2019

Wednesday 4th December 2019 at 18:30 hours

Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3AA

The Fleming Award Meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th December 2019.

This event is free to attend, but advance booking is required, via the link at the bottom of this page. Registration and tea & coffee will be available from 18:00.

The Fleming Award competition is held at an evening meeting of the BGA each December, with entries being invited during the autumn of each year. The award recognises excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project, and is awarded to project teams who have worked on geotechnical projects that have been substantially completed within the two years prior to the award date of December. Each Team is expected to comprise between 3 and 6 people, at least one of whom must be a member of the BGA.

Submitting teams typically include representatives from Clients, Main Contractors, Consulting Engineers, Specialist Contractors and so on. The award is presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction. There is an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project, innovation is also a strong consideration.

Viable Sustainability

Abstract

Geotechnical engineers have long recognised the need for sustainability but today there is a far greater recognition of need to reduce environmental impacts whilst continuing to improve the built environment. We know that resources need to be used in a way which ensures a viable world now and for the future, and the design and construction of new foundations is usually highly efficient, but progress with the re-using existing foundations is limited. There are difficulties which prevent progress with re-use but recent experience at Battersea Power Station provides some practical perspectives on what makes foundation re-use a challenge and what we might do to be more successful with re-use in the future.

Speaker biography

Rachel Monteith is a Director with BuroHappold leading the ground engineering team. She has worked in geotechnical engineering for 30 years starting with specialist contractor, Bachy Soletanche, followed by Sir Robert McAlpine, before joining Buro Happold 4 years ago. She has a wide range of practical construction and design experience much of which has involved deep basements and foundations on tight urban sites along with foundation re-use, and instrumentation for monitoring and assessment of behaviour and impacts on adjacent assets.

After the event there will be a drinks reception.

The event is kindly sponsored by Cementation Skanska, who donate a prize of £1,000.
