The Innovation in Geotechnical Engineering Series is a platform for knowledge sharing between Academia and Industry, promoting rigorous discourse between young professionals in this field focusing on three main themes: Technical knowledge, Sustainability & Digital Transformation.


This talk will detail the research, development process and design theory behind the new Roger Bullivant Continuous Displacement Auger (CDA) pile. This will include the benefits offered by this wet cast displacement system over conventional piling techniques, and where the ‘gap in the market’ was identified for the use of the product. The performance of the pile on a selection of trials carried out in the UK will also be explored, along with the conclusions gained from analysis of the test results, which are now used for the current geotechnical design of the pile. The talk will also highlight the evolution of the displacement auger tool for pile installation from prototype to the modular form it currently occupies.

Nicola Carr

Nicola has over 14 years of experience working within the Piling Industry. She now works as a Senior Designer/Estimator at Roger Bullivant, dealing with a wide range of piling and ground improvement techniques across the UK. She is an avid member of the Research and Development team at Roger Bullivant, looking at the development of Piling Techniques and will share her experience of one of the most recently developed pile types, in which she was responsible for. She has particular interest in the behaviour of cast insitu piles in over consolidated clays within the UK, and the interaction with the soil strata.
