Fin Jardine

The BGA is very sad to report that Finlay (Fin) Jardine passed away over the Christmas period

The BGA is very sad to hear that Fin Jardine has passed away.

We are sad to report that Finlay (Fin) Jardine passed away over the Christmas period.  Fin graduated in Civil Engineering from Kings College, University of London, and from there went into industry, joining Balfour Beatty in 1963, working on various geotechnical engineering projects around the UK and in Nigeria from 1964 to 1966 (interacting with Peter Vaughan at this time).  In 1968 Fin moved to Nuttall Geotechnical Services, becoming Technical Director in the 1970s, and was involved in many projects in the UK until 1982, including the Channel Tunnel.  He then became an Associate Director at Binnie and Partners, working in Egypt and Hong Kong from 1982 to 1984.  Soon after his return to the UK, Fin joined CIRIA in 1986 and soon became a mainstay there as Technical Editor and Research Manager for many CIRIA projects, conferences and publications until he retired in 2002.  It is Fin’s extensive work at CIRIA for which he will be probably best remembered.  He interacted with many people from both academia and industry and was highly respected for his knowledge and experience and the quality and extensiveness of his work and the publications that followed.  He was also greatly sought after as an independent assessor for conferences and organisations such as EPSRC, adding quality to proposals and publications alike through rigorous review and constructive comment.  He was always supportive of geotechnics as a subject and of new entrants trying to make their way in the field.  He will be greatly missed.

Our condolences go to his family and colleagues.

The above statement was prepared by Professor Jamie Standing and others, with the support of the Jardine family.
