Winner announced of 2023 BGA Masters Prize

The BGA is pleased to announce that Thirimadura Supun Surendra Mendis of Imperial College London is the winner of the 2023 BGA Masters prize for his entry “Advanced 3D Numerical Modelling of Deep Basement and Tunnel Interaction in London”.

The dissertation was considered by the judges to be very well presented and to include a through literature review section. The adopted analytical approach was to gradually increase model complexity and limit the number of variables between the different analyses. This aspect, along with the sensitivity analyses undertaken, facilitated the drawing of conclusions on the degree of success in the use of the different constitutive models. The conclusions of this work are directly applicable to everyday practice and do a great job at stimulating thought.

The Masters Prize is awarded annually by the BGA for the best MSc/MEng degree dissertation on a geotechnical topic. The other dissertation submitted for consideration was:

Gregory McNamara, University of Surrey, “Modelling Wet-Dry Cycles in Solar Farm Foundations using the Barcelona Basic Model”.

The judges found both dissertations to be of a very high standard, making the final decision extremely challenging.
