Professor Scott Sloan

It is with great sadness that the BGA shares the sad news that Professor Scott Sloan, the 51st Rankine Lecturer, passed away on 23 April 2019.

It is with great sadness that the BGA shares the sad news that Professor Scott Sloan, the 51st Rankine Lecturer, and internationally renowned geotechnical engineer, passed away on 23 April 2019.

Professor Sloan was Laureate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2000, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2007, Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering in 2015 and Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 2015. He was named as the Government of New South Wales Scientist of the Year in 2015 and made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to education in 2018.

The BGA extends its condolences to Scott’s, family, colleagues and friends. His passing is a great loss to the international geotechnical community.
