Call for Entries – BGA Fleming Award 2018

The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is pleased to invite entries for the Fleming Award from Project Teams who have worked on geotechnical projects that have been substantially completed within the two years prior to the award date of December 2018.

Submitting teams will typically include representatives from Clients, Main Contractors, Consulting Engineers, Specialist Contractors and so on. The award will be presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction. There will be an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project. Consideration will also be given to projects which are innovative.

The Fleming Competition is held annually to commemorate the life and work of Dr Ken Fleming and to recognise excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project. There is a prize of £1,000, donated by Cementation Skanska Foundations. Previous winners can be viewed here.

The 2017 award was won by The PISA Project Team – Oxford University, Imperial College London, DONG Energy, Carbon Trust and SOCOTEC UK (formerly ESG) representing the many companies involved in the Project. The Pile Soil Analysis (PISA) project is a research project aimed at investigating and developing improved design methods for laterally loaded piles, specifically tailored to the offshore wind sector. Further details can be found here.

Full details of the competition and instructions for entries can be downloaded here.

An application form can be downloaded here.

Submissions should be sent to Shelagh.Fleming@ice.org.uk by 30 September 2018.
