Synopsis

You may have heard of InSAR and Earth Observation; you may know they are useful for site monitoring, but you have no idea where to begin. The new CIRIA guide will help you understand what these are and how to use them wisely, using case studies to illustrate a variety of applications. The guidance is an essential introduction to both Earth Observation and InSAR techniques, for anyone working in infrastructure.

This talk will cover the new CIRIA guidance, “InSAR and Earth Observation Techniques for infrastructure” and will be useful and interesting to anyone with an interest in remotes sensing / using satellite data to monitor infrastructure and assets. Also at this event some of the latest developments in geohazard assessment using earth observation and AI will be presented. The use of satellite derived information combined with geotechnical knowledge enable susceptibility assessments to geohazards, regularly updated, incorporating climate change impacts on infrastructure assets.

Speaker Biography

Dr Skevi Perdikou - Technology Manager, Geofem

Skevi holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering and a PhD in Satellite Remote Sensing from the University of Southampton. She specialises in the application of satellite remote sensing technology to civil and geotechnical engineering projects. She has 20 years of experience in the research, application and teaching of earth observation techniques. She is the Technology Manager at Geofem, leading the satellite remote sensing group and coordinating innovation projects funded by the European Space Agency and European Union. Her work is currently focussed on developing techniques to assess the susceptibility of infrastructure assets to geohazards, such as landslides, using earth observation data.

Dr Philippa Mason - Senior Lecturer, Imperial College London

Philippa Mason is an expert in remote sensing geology, with over 25 years’ experience in the application and development of EO in exploration, environment and engineering on Earth and other planets. Her research interests are in the application of EO and InSAR across many aspects of geoscience and civil engineering. Philippa is a member of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) Advisory Board, a member of the International Space Science Institute’s Science Board, a Director and Fellow of the RSPSoc, and an Honorary Life Member of the GRSG. She has an extensive record of research and has published several research articles, technical and advisory reports and books. She is co-leader of the Earth Observation Network at Imperial College London, a multi-disciplinary research hub.
