14th BGA Young Geotechnical Engineers Symposium (YGES) 2016

5th -6th July, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

As geotechnical engineers we are tasked with meeting societal demands for low cost, efficient, sustainable, resilient and reliable construction and infrastructure, which supports our energy supply, transportation, water distribution networks, waste management, flood control and land reclamation/remediation now and into the future. Furthermore we must achieve all of this at a time of unprecedented change when we are faced with major challenges associated with climate change, the low carbon agenda, resource depletion, demographic shifts and migration. Meeting the (often competing) demands of society in this changing landscape will only be achieved with innovative thinking in geotechnical engineering.

The Young Geotechnical Engineers Symposium 2016 will bring together students, researchers and practising engineers to discuss the latest advances in geotechnical engineering. This is a valuable opportunity to present your work and build relationships. To be eligible to make an oral presentation at the Symposium delegates should be under 35 years of age on the first day of the Symposium. However there is no age limit for mature students.

There is no restriction on the topic other than it must demonstrate innovation in research, design or construction in geotechnical engineering. We welcome submissions from both research and industry projects.

Programme

The Symposium will take place over two days on 5th and 6th July 2016 at the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, view map. The TIC building is located on the Strathclyde campus in the heart of the city centre, a short 15 min walk from Glasgow Central Station and 5 min from Queen Street Station. The Symposium will take the form of a traditional conference with oral presentations and keynote speakers. There will be a symposium dinner on the first night.

Keynote Speakers

    • Prof Andy Sloan, Donaldsons Associates
The development of underground space and urbanisation
    • Prof Alessandro Tarantino, University of Strathclyde
Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards

Workshop

There will be a half-day workshop on the 7th July (morning only) free of charge to delegates. It will take place on the Strathclyde campus and will showcase field instrumentation for soil monitoring and investigation including geophysical techniques (Electrical Resistivity Tomography) and local instrumentation (Time Domain Reflectometry and Tensiometers). Delegates will have the opportunity to gets hands-on experience of installing these devices in the field and acquiring data.

Submission of summary

In order to present at the Symposium, you must prepare a two-page summary on a geotechnical industry or research project using the YGES Summary Template. Send the completed summary by email to yge-symposium2016@strath.ac.uk by 7th June 2016.
