The BGA is pleased to announce the shortlisted entries for the 2017 Fleming Award. The finalists will present at the Fleming Award evening on 6 December 2017, when a judging panel will select the winner.

This year there were a record number of entries for the competition, eleven in total. They were very diverse in nature ranging from the construction of deep excavations, slope stabilisation, slope reconstruction, site investigation, retaining wall construction and offshore foundations. All of the entries were of high quality and the shortlisting judges had great difficulty in separating them bearing in mind the criteria set for the award. Nevertheless they agreed that the three projects that should be taken forward to the final for presentation were as follows (project team members in brackets):

Pines Hotel Cliff Stabilisation Scheme (CH2M, Raymond Brown Construction, The Pines Hotel)

Garrion Gill Slope Remediation (Network Rail Infrastructure Projects Scotland, QTS Group Limited, COWI UK Limited, Cementation Skanska, Datum Group)

The PISA Project (Oxford University, Imperial College London, DONG Energy, Carbon Trust and SOCOTEC UK (formerly ESG) representing the many companies involved in the Project)

The Fleming Award event will be held on the evening of 6 December 2017 at the Institution of Civil Engineers. Full details of the event will be on the BGA website shortly.

The Fleming Award Competition is held annually to commemorate the life and work of Dr Ken Fleming and to recognise excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project. Entries are invited from teams which will typically include representatives from Clients, Main Contractors, Consulting Engineers, Specialist Contractors and so on. The award will be presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction. There will be an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project. Consideration will also be given to projects which are innovative.

The Fleming Award is supported by Cementation Skanska.
