15th BGA Young Geotechnical Engineers Symposium (YGES) was a great success

The Young Geotechnical Engineers Symposium (YGES 2018) was held at the University of Surrey on 2nd and 3rd July 2018 and brought together together students, researchers and practicing engineers to discuss the latest advances in geotechnical engineering and how to address the current ground engineering challenges.

The event hosted in total about 60 delegates, with three invited keynote speakers and eight technical session chairs, from 15 Universities and seven companies.

The 34 presentations covered a wide range of geotechnical engineering related topics, including offshore wind turbine foundations, geothermal energy piles, seismic and soil liquefaction, dam erosion monitor, grouting, temporary supporting work, behaviours of soil-rubber mixture and fibre reinforced soil, and particle scale mechanism. The investigation methodology ranged from laboratorial element tests to numerical simulations, from small scale physical modelling tests to field monitoring and industrial applications.

Mr Hugo Wood from COWI and Dr Ganga Prakhya from Sir Robert McAlpine delivered excellent Keynote Lectures on the state-of-art technologies used in geotechnical projects.

Prof Dipanjan Basu from University of Waterloo in Canada gave a valuable Keynote Lecture on an advanced analytical framework for soil-structure interaction problems.

This symposium offered an excellent opportunity for young students, researchers and practicing engineers working in industry to showcase the latest advances, innovative projects and techniques applied to the field of geotechnical engineering. It also provided them an opportunity to receive feedback from professionals and senior academics, and building relationships with colleagues from different organisations and sectors. It is certain that many of these contributions will have a significant impact and will contribute to advancing the state of the art and state of practice in geotechnical engineering.
